Adding gamepad controls and challenges

Hello!

I'm currently working on adding gamepad controls to my game because I want to relax while reading rather than doing the Enter simulator. Not that it's bad but I've been using a controller on every game that supports it on PC (I also play on console), and I feel it's way easier. I stopped playing with keyboard and mouse religiously since I hooked up my controller years ago. ~_~

I'm aware other visual novels lack controller support so I just map them or hope they have just a little bit even if I just have to press Cross/A to confirm every dialogue lol. What do you think about adding gamepad controls?

I also thought about adding mobile game functionality but I don't really play games with my phone because for one, my phone is slow because it's cheap and I just use it mostly for reading light novels or manga.

So challenges...

Adding events on GDevelop to recognize controls on gamepad was easy until I encountered an issue with a button extension because it doesn't have a feature that changes the state from anything else but the mouse (focused, idle, pressed). Other examples I found had they created their own selector created/modified for this that also has a fixed position. I did that but I encountered another issue because I wanted to make my UI responsive; setting a fixed position for the selector didn't work. I adjusted the camera by centering it to an invisible object but I guess I have to suck it up with the black bars and forget making the UI responsive. I didn't want the resolution to suffer or we'll end up playing with a smaller window which I didn't like.

I'm also struggling with the variables and switching back and forth with a mouse. I guess I understand now why some visual novels don't have them integrated well lol. For example, if I switch to gamepad, the buttons will change but it conflicts if I move the mouse, etc.

On other news, I'm also thinking of adding intermissions like pauses between chapters. I asked some of my friends around for feedback as well for the story. It'll be a short one but I didn't feel it'll be short because it'll have more interactions and more characters. I hope I can finish it before next winter jam!
